The Church of the Brethren has many brochures available on the denominational website. Please check there if you are unable to find an answer to your questions here. Also, please send your questions via the email form for more information.

How will I get there?

You can take your own vehicle or ride with somebody else. We try to pair people up so they don’t have to drive alone but the idea is to reduce the costs as much as possible.

Where will I stay?

There will be accommodations set up for you when you get there. They try to make them as comfortable as possible but it wont be the Ritz. You will most likely have to share a room and sometimes you may have to wait for the bathroom but the people that are running the project are very understanding and will try to accommodate you as bet as they can. You can take your own accommodations if you like ie trailer, motor home, pup tent however we wont be able to reimburse you for gas if you bring ant of these things, well maybe if you bring a pup tent.

How will I eat?

Your meals are provided for you. Breakfast and dinner are cooked for you and fixins are laid out for you to make a lunch. You will not go hungry during your stay and meals are one of the great social gatherings where everyone shares the adventures of the day. The only meal we ask you to provide for yourself is the Sunday night dinner. Because project managers don’t know when or how many people will make it to the site no meal is prepared. Everybody gets together and goes out for dinner.

What kind of work will I do?

Because all of the projects are always in a different state of completion and because the type of work from project to project it is almost impossible to say for sure what will be asked of you. You may be asked to painting, put up drywall, clear debris, put on a roof or build a wall. You could do something different every day or the same thing for a few days in a row. The only thing we can say for sure is that you will not be asked to do anything that you are not comfortable doing. We try to have everybody fill out an skills assessment form before you go and pass this along to the project director so the jobs and the people can be better matched.

What skills do I need?

The only thing you need is a desire to help. You will not be asked to do anything you don’t feel you can do but you will be amazed at how easy things can be with just a two minute block of instruction. There will be others there to guide you and nobody expects your work to be professional quality. Even if you only feel comfortable assisting someone else, that in it self is helping. God does not choose the qualified he qualifies the chosen.

Who are the people I will be working with?

They are your neighbors. Some you go to church with some live on the other side of the state. Some you may know others you wont. They are people just like you. They want to help and do for others. Some will know everything there is to know about building a house others know nothing but a desire to share the burden of those in need. You will share stories and break bread with new friends and have an adventure you can share with your old friends.

What do I need to take?

We ask that you bring along with you some bedding ie.. sheets, blanket, sleeping bag, pillow. What ever you need for your nightly slumber. The beds generally have only a mattress. You should also bring a few changes of cloth. Some times there is a place to do laundry and sometimes there is not. If you feel comfortable with your own tools that’s okay feel free to bring them but there should be tools on site for what you need. Bring a little money for personal expenses. Most of all bring along a desire to help those in need.

What will it cost me?

We are trying to make it so that you have no money out of pocket yourself. You are giving up you time for this trip we don’t want you to have to pay your way too. We do ask that you try to keep your expenses down to the bare minimum. And, you could, if you want, choose not to turn in your receipts. Some people see this as a way to help the effort. We leave that up to you.

How do I get my expenses back?

Hang on to your receipts and we will give you a reimbursement form to turn in and send you a check, the address for where to send them is on the form.
